This carved Māori 21st Birthday Patu is a popular alternative to the traditional 21st key.
The patu is made from sustainably farmed Tulip Wood, a hardwood (but surprisingly lightweight).
It is inlaid with native New Zealand Paua Shell, found only in NZ waters, and a type of abalone. Paua has beautiful irridescent shades of blue, green, pink and purple, and no two pieces are the same.
A great 21st gift, replacing a key, one they can easily take with them and hang on the wall, wherever in the world they get to.
The patu measures approximately 41.5cm (16 3/8") long.
The patu can be laser engraved on the back with the recipients name and birthdate (or 21st date), for an additional charge. It can also be paua engraved with the name (only), but the name can only have up to 15 characters (CAPITALS ONLY).
Please note that once engraved, the patu cannot be returned, aside from the unlikely event of us getting the engraving wrong.
There is also the option of purchasing the patu nestled in a deluxe black gift box - perfect as a presentation gift. Alternatively, you can also purchase a flax bag to keep or give the patu in.

Ordering the patu was very straightforward and communication around it was great. When I looked up delivery it said they had tried to deliver twice that week and it was being sent back to Aotearoa, even though we were left no cards of attempted deliveries and both times they indicated we were home. I immediately emailed Customer service and I think it was Margaret was most prompt in responding saying it was unusual and she would raise an inquiry her end. After a few emails back and forth she suggested I phone Australia post to which I did locally and thankfully they had it just in time for my Son’s 21st. He absolutely loved his gift.

Pāua was only a sticker, and was hollow wood really not strong at all. Not worth the money, and should really be told it’s only a sticker before buying
