This Māori Manaia Protector Bone Heru Comb is traditionally worn in a top knot.
It measures approximately 16cm (6 1/4") long, and is an affordable heru, perfect for kapa haka performances, Nation Days, etc.
Heru indicated the rank of the wearer and were often carved from a single piece of wood, whale bone or were made of many individual wooden prongs intricately bound together.
The Manaia design carries a spiritual meaning. The manaia is a provider and protector over land, sea and air. This manaia has beautiful carving, and a paua (abalone) shell eye.
