Short Māori Korowai in Ngāti Porou Colours

This Māori Short Korowai Cloak has been made in Ngāti Porou colours for a customer. Anyone can wear it though, and it is perfect for those who love this colour combination of the yellow/ black/ white taniko, with white and purple feathers.

The korowai, or kahu huruhuru (feather cloak) to be absolutely correct, is made by a Māori lady of Ngāti Porou descent.   She learned the art of making korowai from her mother, who learnt the art from a Northland kuia.

The taniko is in a patiki pattern, which represents the flounder.  Spiritually it signifies generosity, abundance, and hospitality. 

The Yellow in the taniko represents the Ngāti Porou maunga Hikurangi, the first point in New Zealand and indeed the world, to see the sun. 

The feathers at the top are white, to represent snow on the maunga.
The purple feathers below the white signify the colour of the ribbon on the  Victoria Cross awarded to Lt Te Moana-nui-a-kiwa Ngarimu (a courageous Ngāti Porou soldier during WW II), and the C Company of the 28th Māori Battalion).
