River Rimu Maori Kowhaiwhai Jewellery or Trinket Box

This lovely jewellery or trinket box has a lid inlaid with a Maori Kowhaiwhai (rafter pattern) design.

The jewellery box is made from River Rimu.  River Rimu is made from rimu logs recovered from the depths of New Zealand's rivers, creeks and swamps.  Minerals absorbed from the riverbed change the original honey colour of native rimu to this darker, richer shade of brown.

As the box is made from reclaimed timber, you are looking at a piece that is 100 to 150 years old!

The hinged box measures approximately 80mm x 80mm x 40mm (3" x 3" x 1 5/8").  Due to natural variations in colour, no two boxes are the same.

Inside, there is room for a necklace or earrings measuring up to about 6.5cm long, or 7.5cm long if you place it on the diagonal. (There is a photo to saw a 7.5cm bone necklace in the box.  The necklace is not included in the price).

This makes a fabulous gift box to give with a precious piece of jewellery inside, particularly bone, paua or greenstone.
