The kotare, or kingfisher, is a beautiful New Zealand bird not seen all the time. It hangs out near coastal and freshwater habitats, but can also be found in residential areas, forests, farms etc. Favourite foods are crabs, tadpoles and small fish, as well as insects, lizards, spiders and more. We see it in a residential setting when rain is coming, so it's a helpful reminder that inclement weather is on its way.
