This Maori Hiking Stick is beautifully carved from top to bottom.
The top of the stick features two tekoteko figures, with protruding tongues and paua shell eyes. Further down the shaft there is another, larger, tekoteko figure, and below that, a koruru (head). The design is reminiscent of the carved poles inside a Maori meeting house.
The Maori Hiking Stick is approximately 107cm (42") long, with a rubber tip at the lower end. It could be used as a hiking stick or alternatively a rakau korero, a carved stick wielded by elders when speaking on the marae, to confer authority and accentuate points in a speech.
The carvings represent ancestral figures, and are there to protect and guide.
A beautiful Maori stick, shaped like a thumb stick. Made from sustainably harvested hardwood Tulip Wood.
