Maori Papahou Wakahuia Treasure Box

This Papahou, or Maori Treasure Box, is a very large, fine piece of carving.  Papahou is also another name for a Wakahuia, a Maori Feather Box, but in the case of the papahou, the box would be more commonly used to hold treasured possessions such as tiki or other taonga.

The Papahou measures approximately 50 x 235mm ( 25 1/2" x 9 1/4").  

Carving along the sides is haehae pakati - a dogtooth pattern edged with parallel grooved lines.  On the top is a very manly tekoteko figure, surrounded by haehae pakati.

The box is made from native Matai timber.
