This Maori Bone Manaia Necklace with Paua Trim is intricately hand carved.
The Manaia is a spiritual guardian, a provider and protector over land, sea and sky.
It is often carved, as it is in this instance, with a bird-like head. The scales on its body and its tail refer to its guardianship over the sea.
At the lower edge of its body, a piece of native New Zealand Paua Shell complements the carving, and Paua shell is also used for its eye.
The Manaia measures approximately 5cm (2") long, and rests on a black cord with sliding knots.
