This large double headed cow bone Māori Manaia Necklace is a real beauty.
Large and relatively thick, it makes a statement without being ridiculously large.
At approximately 85mm (3 3/8") long, it is big enough to really show off the skills of the carver, and in particular, the pakati (notched dog tooth) design running down the body of the manaia.
That pakati design has a spiritual meaning, one of strength, courage and leadership. Which combines well with that of the Manaia. Te manaia is the Māori spiritual guardian, providing protection over sea, land and air. Manaia protects against intruders and wards off danger.
This beautiful cow bone manaia has native paua shell eyes, and hangs from a long black plaited cord. The cord has adjustable knots, so you can wear the Manaia wherever you want on your chest.
