This bone and wood Maori Heru Comb has a beautifully carved pikorua decoration at the top.
The pikorua design has a spiritual meaning, one of true love or friendship between two people. The twists represent the twists and turns of life, yet the friendship or love remains endless. Made from bone and wood, with a piece of native paua shell.
Heru were traditionally worn only by men in their topknot, and showed the wearer's mana (prestige). Nowadays they are worn as a hair decoration by both male and female.
The heru measures approximately 16cm (6 1/4") long.
