This bone and wood Maori Heru Comb has a beautifully carved Fish Hook decoration at the top.
The Fish Hook (matau) design has a spiritual meaning, signifying peace, prosperity, good health, and safe travel over water. Made from cow bone and wood, with a piece of native paua shell.
Heru were traditionally worn only by men in their topknot, and showed the wearer's mana (prestige). Nowadays they are worn as a hair decoration by both male and female.
The heru measures approximately 16cm (6 1/4") long.
