This A-Grade Large NZ Paua Shell is beautifully polished to show off the incredibly beauty of New Zealand's native abalone shell.
The shell measures approximately 12cm (5") long.
Paua shell is New Zealand's native abalone,Haliotis iris, found only in NZ waters. No two shells are the same, but all are beautiful. The shell contains irridescent shades of blue, green, pink and purple.
Maori consider paua to be taonga, a treasure, as they are an important seafood as well as the shell being used in arts and crafts. Paua shell is frequently used to represent eyes in Maori carvings.
The shell is often transformed into jewellery, or used in homewares to give a distinctly Kiwi look to an item. On their own, the shells are used as receptacles for jewellery and other small items. The shell is a by-product of paua farming, with the paua collected under a strict quota system.
These polished paua shell can be shipped worldwide. Please note that they do not come boxed.

Very good colours, well finished, although the varnish had clogged the holes in the shell, some of which I think had been ground off.
Has been sent off to Europe where I'm sure it will be admired.
My 92 year old Mum purchased two to give as gifts when she returned from NZ/Aotearoa to Australia. She had been gifted one by a family member here in NZ/Aotearoa and thought they were just the thing to give to people back home...she was THRILLED to receive them in Oz. Great quality, thick clear coat that makes the colour 'zing', and exactly what she thought they would be. Thanks (her first on-line shopping experience!)
The paua shell is beautiful, the colours are amazing, very vibrant. It is a nice show piece and adds flair to any room. The shell was well packed in a box and delivery was relatively fast considering that it travelled all the way to Eastern Canada. ShopNZ staff are friendly and a pleasure to deal with.
My daughter was after 'the perfect paua shell' and when I gave her the two I had bought from you she was delighted! I was concerned at first that the mark on the inside might spoil it for her but it wasn't a problem for her. I thought they were very beautiful. I love the colours and the lovely smooth feel. Thanks, Lynette
Didn't get a chance to buy these beautiful shells on my trip to NZ for my grandaughters. Ordered them and was thrilled with the shells, lovely colours, and great quality. Arrived in Australia in good condition. My little grandaughter were very excited and loved the pretty colours in the shells. Thankyou...Really pleased Nana. 👏
