NZ Giant Weta Plush Toy

This plush cuddly toy represents New Zealand's scary but shy threatened species, the Giant Wētā, wētāpunga.  And I have to admit, I would rather cuddle this toy than an actual weta, which can be pretty scary if you disturb.  But what is more disturbing is how I have seen fewer and fewer of the smaller, more common wētā during my lifetime.  They are just as important as we humans are in our ecosystem.  The giant wētā is now only found on some of our outer islands, although Auckland Zoo is doing a fantastic job of breeding them.

I'm on a mission to take the fear out of kids' minds for New Zealand's creepy crawlies and other creatures - one plush toy at a time.  Conservation of these insects is vital, or we will lose their species.
