This NZ Maori Flag Lapel Badge represents the recognised Maori Flag.
The design for the Maori Flag was decided in 2009, after public consultation. The design was created in 1989 by a group called Te Kawariki, and when put up against 3 other designs, The Tino Rangatiratanga design was the most popular.
The 3 elements of the design are:
- Te Korekore, potential being (black, top)
- Te Whai Ao, coming into being (red, bottom)
- Te Ao Mārama, the realm of being and light (white, centre).
The koru is symbolic of an unfurling new fern frond, representing the unfolding of new life, hope for the future and the process of renewal.
This Maori Flag badge is a pinback badge, measuring approximately 2cm x 2cm (3/4" x 3/4").
