This beautiful woven Māori Blanket is called Tītama, its design inspired by Hinetītama, daughter of Tāne (the forest god) and Hine-ahu-one (the first woman, created from the earth).
Hine-tītama is called the Dawn Maid, the personification of each day's dawn. She represents that wonderful moment when morning's light chases away the night's darkness, a moment of transition and a new start, a time of hope. New day, new light.
The main blanket colour, Navy, represents the night before transition, whilst the Yellow and Gold tones represent the colours of the sunrise.
The blanket also represents the awakening of Māori, the reclaiming of their language and kaupapa, their principles.
