This large hardwood Māori stylised Manaia Heru Comb is a real standout piece, sure to make a statement when you wear it.
Measuring 22cm (8 5/8") long, the heru is lightweight but very strong, due to it being made from the wood of the sapadilla tree.
The design at the top of the heru is a stylised Manaia. The Manaia, with its bird like head, is the Māori spiritual guardian, provider and protector over land, sea and air. It is believed to ward off danger and guard against intruders.
The Heru comb was traditionally worn by Maori to fasten their long hair into a top knot. Heru indicated the rank of the wearer and were often carved from a single piece of wood or whale bone.
Wear yours whenever you like, but especially for kapa haka, special occasions, weddings, etc.
