Maori Fish Hook Necklace Made From Bone Wood and Paua

This beautifully bound Maori Fish Hook Necklace has been made from a combination of cow bone, wood, and paua shell, with its design closely following that of Maori fish hooks still found in New Zealand museums.

The ancient fish hooks in the museums were made from wood, shell, and bone.  The irridescent natural colours of paua shell lining the shank attracted the fish, and from there they were hooked. 

This fish hook necklace (hei matau) has a cream coloured plaited cord, binding at the top of the necklace, and binding where the bone hook joins the wood shank.

The pendant measures approximately 6.5cm (2 5/8") long, and the plaited cord it hangs from has sliding knots, so you can position it where you want on your chest.

The hei matau (fish hook) design carries a spiritual meaning.  The hook design represents peace, prosperity, good health, and safe travel over water.  

Please note that because of all the intricate work that goes into making this necklace, we recommend treating it like the taonga (treasure) it is, and not wearing it in the shower or the sea.
