This beautifully carved Maori Koauau is a replica of the traditional Maori flute.
The Koauau flute was originally carved from wood or bone, and sometimes stone. The bone would be bird bone, from the moa or albatross.
This carved wood Koauau is approximately 5 3/4" (14.5cm) long and has two pieces of New Zealand paua shell on the sides. It is made from sustainly harvested Tulip Wood, a lightweight but very strong hardwood.
How to play the koauau: The koauau is a side blown flute. Purse your lips as if you are about to whistle, and then position the koauau against your lips, as if you are blowing across the end (not directly into the end). Turn the koauau until you make your best sound. We've had people in the warehouse playing these koauau, and the sound is beautiful.
The flute comes to you on a stand. So you could turn it into a Maori Music award.
We can put a gold engraved plaque on the side of stand. Choose up to 8 words, and enter those in the text box that opens up when you choose the engraved option.
Please note that we cannot take back any engraved items, except in the unlikely event that we have done the engraving wrong. Allow 3-4 days for engraving to be done.
