This Koauau Flute is Maori made in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. It is made by a carver of Ngati Kahungungu/ Tu Wharetoa descent, a graduate of the NZ Maori Arts & Crafts Institute, Rotorua.
The koauau has been skillfully turned and carved from native totara. It measures approximately 12cm x 3.1cm (4 3/4" x 1 1/4"), and comes to you in a plaited flax bag (kete).
In the right hands, the koauau can make beautiful music, as happened in the story of Hinemoa and Tutanekai. Tutanekai was able to convince his love Hinemoa to swim to him across Lake Rotorua, by the beautiful sound he made on the koauau.
The koauau is a side blown flute. Purse your lips as if you are about to whistle, and then position the koauau against your lips, as if you are blowing across the end (not directly into the end). Turn the koauau until you make your best sound.
