Carved Wooden Maori Patu

This Carved Wooden Maori Patu is an example of the traditional Maori artefact, used mostly in pre-European times.

The patu was traditionally made out of wood or stone, and if made from greenstone was more commonly called a mere.

A Patu is a pre-European Maori club. This patu is made from a sustainably sourced hardwood called Tulip Wood, which is strong but lightweight.  It measures approximately 32cm (12 1/2") long.

The patu has a rope cord, for it to be hung from the wrist.
