This carved Māori Mahogany Patu is a beautiful piece to add to your collection, or to give as a trophy or birthday gift.
The patu is hand carved, and measures approximately 29cm (11 1/2") long. As it is handcarved, expect the odd minor imperfection, which just adds to its charm. Current stock is quite highly polished and dark.
This Carved Wooden Māori Patu is an example of the traditional Māori patu, used mostly in pre-European times, since it became somewhat obsolete after the arrival of the Europeans and their guns.
The patu was traditionally made out of wood or stone, and if made from greenstone was more commonly called a mere.
The patu has a cord, for it to be hung from the wrist.
Purchase the patu on its own, or with a South Island pine stand. The stand measures approximately 34.5cm (13 1/2") long.
The stand can also be engraved. Choose from the following options:
1) Gold engraved plaque on front of stand. Choose up to 8 words.
2) Engraving into the wood, front edge of stand. Choose up to 5 words.
3) Paua engraving into the wood, front of stand. Choose up to 18 characters, CAPITALS only.
Choose your engraving option, and then a box will open up, where you enter the wording you require. Please note that engraved items cannot be returned, except for the unlikely event that we get the engraving wrong. Allow approximately 3 days for engraving to be done.
There is also the option of purchasing the patu and stand nestled in a deluxe black gift box - perfect as a presentation gift.

A thoroughly excellent example of Maori craftsmanship and a very nice example of what makes NZ Unique. I bought this whilst stuck in hospital and in need of cheering up. A few weeks later a taiaha was a an excellent completion of a traditional weapons. The last item I want is a Greenstone mere and I will be very happy then.

As lovely as this patu and stand are, I did not expect it to be so light when held. For display purposes only, it is not one that could be used to practice with. The Patu Pounamu would have been the better choice but the wood used in the handle and the stand itself would be my concern in that one too. We had whakatauki engraved in the stand and this was BEAUTIFULLY set, BUT over time that may chip if not looked after, due to the low quality of wood used. The size of the patu and stand was just big enough for the event, however I will be organising a replacement when I go back to Aotearoa NZ as the quality of this one is as I mentioned before, purely for display purposes only.
