What is the Best Souvenir from New Zealand? What is the Best Souvenir from New Zealand?

Posted on by Lesley Armstrong

Such a good question - What is the Best Souvenir from New Zealand?  And the answer depends on where you are from, or where you are sending it.  Different cultures love different aspects of New Zealand.  But there are certain souvenirs that transcend culture and nationality, and are universally popular.

Scarves. Scarves are popular with nationalities from all over the world, and they are useful too.  You know when you give it to someone that they can make use of it, will find an outfit for it to go with.  Souvenir scarves from New Zealand tend to be covered with ferns or kiwi, or some of our other native birds.

Tea Towels. No matter how common tea towels are as souvenirs, they are still just as popular. And it makes sense.  They are attractive and they are useful, and they can always be on display.  Some people don't want to use them, and instead they frame them as wall art.  Which is pretty clever!  Kitchen towels, the ones you use to wipe your hands on, are also hugely popular.

NZ Food. Our unique lollies (candy) are in hot demand, as well as uniquely New Zealand teas, like Feijoa tea and other herbal blends.  Pineapple Lumps are popular with everyone, and fun treats like Kiwi Poo Candy bring a smile to the faces of anyone receiving it.  Feijoa and Kiwifruit Jams are also well liked.

Coasters. Again, such a common souvenir worldwide, but for good reason.  They are useful, and they are conversation starters.  Any NZ native bird coasters are popular gifts.

Keychains.  Yes, again, keychains are a common souvenir worldwide, most likely because they are cheap and you can buy heaps to give to lots of people.  Keychains featuring NZ birds are well liked.

Souvenirs with Maori designs. Think mugs, drink bottles, magnets, beanies, and caps.  Maori designs are intriguing to many overseas cultures, and unique to New Zealand.

NZ Made Manuka Honey Skincare. Manuka Honey is renowned worldwide for its natural nourishing, healing and protecting qualities, and Manuka Honey skincare made in New Zealand is relatively inexpensive. So it is popular with tourists and locals alike.  Many tourists try it while on holiday in New Zealand, then come back to ShopNZ to renew their supply.

Paua Shell. Paua is our native New Zealand abalone, found only in NZ waters. The shell is incredibly beautiful, with irridescent shades of blue, green, pink and purple which really show up when the shell is polished.  The shell has many uses, but in particular it makes beautiful jewellery.  There is nothing quite like it, so paua shell jewellery is a very popular souvenir of New Zealand.

I've only scratched the surface of the huge range of New Zealand souvenirs. Take a look around ShopNZ to find lots more.
