The trophy depicts the stern of a Maori canoe (waka).  It is the perfect trophy to recognise leadership, given that the navigator of the waka is the leader of the paddlers.  Today the taurapa (stern piece) trophy signifies authority and leadership.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe stern piece is called the Taurapa, and just like a real waka, the trophy encorporates the takarangi spiral.  The takarangi spiral is a double spiral, running both inwards and outwards, and represents different beliefs to different Maori. \u003cspan\u003eFor some, the open spiral represents the start of human creation, when light and knowledge entered the world.
