This Maori Bone Hook Koru Necklace is a beautiful 2-sided design from Peter Mitchell, who descends from the Ngati Toa iwi of Porirua.
Peter carves these beautiful cow bone necklaces with one design on the front and a different design on the back. Two necklaces in one!
Peter is a master carver, having carved for museums and exhibitions over the past 30 years. We are lucky to have a few of his pieces.
The front of this hei matau has a beautiful koru carved into the bottom edge.
The back of the hei matau is more of a traditional shape, with a sweeping curve across the upper edge.
Both the hook and koru designs carry spiritual meanings. The fish hook design represents peace. prosperity and good health, and safe travel over water. The koru design represents the unfurling new fern shoot, and signifies peace, tanquility, new beginnings, and positive change.
The hook necklace is bound with a strong plaited cord with adjustable knot, so you can position it where you want on your chest.
The necklace measures approximately 5cm (2") long.
Peter doesn't bleach his carvings to a pure white, so you will still see the natural striations in the bone.
