This genuine NZ Greenstone Toki Necklace is dressed up with additional surface carving.
The criss cross carving mimics taniko, the Maori traditional weaving technique. Taniko was used to make borders of cloaks, as well as headbands, bodices, belts and jewellery.
This pounamu toki is carved from Hokitika greenstone, and carved in New Zealand. It is beautifully bound at the top, and hangs from a long adjustable cord.
The toki measures approximately 6cm (2 1/4") long.
The hei toki (toki necklace) represents the Maori adze (toki). The Toki (adze) was an important Maori implement, used to chip and shave wood and stone, and sometimes used as a weapon. In bone or greenstone jewellery form, it was traditionally worn by Maori elders, as it represented power, wisdom and authority.
Wear yours with pride ( we recommend having a friend or family member put it over your head for the first time), or give it as a beautiful gift of New Zealand.
